Biography of Benjamin William Emerson

Ben Emerson has practiced law for almost his entire working life, first in commercial real estate, finance and contracts law then transitioned early in his career to local government law. He served as County Attorney for Caroline County for over 30 years along with working for other government clients as a member of the Local Government group at Sands Anderson. He was a long-time member of the Board of Directors for that firm, serving as Chief Financial Officer for many of his terms. Ben earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Richmond, his MFA in Theater Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and his law degree at the UR School of Law.

Ben was introduced to lineage societies as a youngster through his mother, a member of the Colonial Dames and the DAR. Through his ancestor Captain Samuel Ransom, he was admitted to Children of the American Revolution, the Sons of the Revolution, and the Society of the Cincinnati. He served as Virginia State President and National Vice-President of the CAR and, as an adult, as Governor of our Society and as Virginia’s Deputy Governor General for the General Society. Ben and his wife Nancy have two sons and five grandchildren. He enjoys gardening, hiking, choral singing and sporting clays.
